geneaguidegermany welcome at geneaguidegermany, the youtube channel for everything about genealogy in germany. in our last video we told you about the discoveries that can be found in the attics and basements of your family. today we show you how to store your new found treasures the best way to enjoy them as long as possible. if you found photos, especially very old ones, you should treat them really carefully. that means you should only touch them on the edges or passe-partout and make sure to have clean hands and fingers. because sweat and skin fat can destroy the coating of a photograph. who wants to play it safe should wear gloves, for example cotton gloves which are often used in many archives. (chair creak)

as long as you have the necessary technics on hand, digitalizing your photos would be the first thing to do. using a scanner is the easiest way for this. for an optimal result, the glass plate of your scanner and the photos have to be free from dust and dirt. dust on your photos can be removed with a brush or a spray with compressed air, which is also common for cleaning keyboards. this is better than just blowing the dust off. who owns a scanner may know the following problem: you want the best scan qualitiy and so you choose the highest possible resolution. but this isn't necessary if you want to print your photos in their original size. for printing a photo in original size a scanning resolution between 300 and 400 dpi is enough. reproduction in poster size even requires only 125 dpi.

only if you want to enlarge or edit a photo on your computer you should use a higher resolution. if a photo has very filigree structures or very small printings on it, the resolution can be increased up to 600 dpi. everything else would only fill unnecessary space on your computer and would slow the loading process of the image file. maybe some of you also found old slides and don't know how to deal with them. there are some services for digitalizing slides, which saves time and allows a good qualitiy, but is also expensive. it's easier to use a scanner with transparency unit. we had very good results with this option. the only disadvantage is that you need more time. but the results are worth showing and even negatives can be digitalized. after the scanning process you should save backups of your files on several storage media, just in case of a data loss.

besides photos, documents of all kind can be found. this could be letters, certificates, postcards and so on. they should also be digitalized like the photographs to protect the originals if you use the documents often and also to make duplicates. how do i store the findings after digitalizing them? just because they are digital available now, the originals should not have to go back into a shadowy existence in the basement or attic. these places are often very humid and have extreme variations in temperature, which can destroy your findings. it's better to give thought to a time lasting way of archiving to preserve photos and documents as long as possible. a storage should always take place in a climatic stable and dry location to give no chances to mildew. direct and intense sunlight for a longer period should also be avoided, because it fades the colors and inks.

photographs that you find in old albums should be carefully removed, especially when they are in a plastic pocket. those often contain chemicals like plasticizer and can destroy the coating of your photographs. approved is the storage of single photos in pergamin paper, which is also used in professional archives. if you want to be very particular about it, you can insert leafs of acid-free and basic buffered archive paper between the single pages of your documents. buffered means that the paper has been treated with calcium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide to increase the ph-value. if acid ions appear because of different environmental impacts they can be neutralized to a certain degree by the buffered paper. you may see how important it is to handle your old photos and documents with care. see you next time! your hobby genealogists. that's it for today at geneaguidegermany.
