hello reptil tv community to episode 75 my intro animal is a female bearded dragon until a few years ago this sandfire red was the benchmark now we have spectacular colors, this is called hypo blood. really nice red animal. really pretty, color still faded by skinning we see, head, legs, really nice red animal i just wanted to show you this episode is all about building a diy terrarium bevor we start to build the terrarium, you have to know if it is for a snake, lizard, turtle... ... living on the tree or ground. does it get big? we must be thoughtful

how big the terrarium has to be we have official keeping guidelines in germany you can find them on exopedia.de or ms-reptilien.de menu item "haltungsrichtlinien". there you can find how big it has to be for each animal. and then the question if you want to keep the baby animal for the beginning in a smaller terrarium and later in a bigger. it is great if you have a animal that already is big then you donâ´t have to buy two terrariums. that are the thoughts you have to do first for your own builds you wil not come around wood. glass cutting is for normal people not easy thats why wood or plastic boards have proven to be good for the build you need glue, glass guide profiles, perforated metal plate or ventilation grids

you need glass for the sliding glass panes and wood or an other material to build the box except the wood you can buy all the material in our online shop to build your own terrarium if you need a individual terrarium with a special size for a cupboard or corner you need to cut the wood to size that it fits if you are flexible and have 1-1,20m space we have these practical kits they cost less like if you buy everything yourself. it comes in this carton with everything inside just unpack it and build your terrarium in this case we build this version. everything is cut and drilled already perfectly with this kit i can show you how it works. these are osb wood plates.

these are wet room plates you can use. they do not moldy. we talk about them later inside are a nice instruction manual, ventilation grids and the screws. after unpacking we start lets start with the bottom plate the instruction manual is easy. ikea freaks even donâ´t need it ;) we start with the side plates. it is easy if you put the bottom plate upright important, the holes for the ventilation have to be on one side up, and on the other down first we screw together the sides, then the top, back and front plates now we have the sides and the top plates. the holes are pre-drilled look that the edges are flush. now screw together the back and front plates

i'm a bit out of breath now, it took 15 min to assemble it like this another important point: for the front you have to use the short screws. the last step is to assemble the ventilation grids from the inside another tip, assemble the ventilation grids first, then screw everything together. much easier... mount the ventilations grids from the inside, the animal has no way to press them out i personally think it would even be better if the ventilation grids would be only on one side better would be on one side, right or left. then we have a better air circulation. the hot air gets out on the top, new fresh air comes from the bottom. so you have a permanent air exchange on one side and not throughout the whole terrarium

we have already contacted the manufacturer that the come in the future with the ventilation on one side if you build your own terrarium, also just put the ventilation grids on one side and not crosswise another important point i get asked, a lot of you want make the box waterproof these are wet room plates, they can stand some humidity if you would seal it completely, you would have to use some toxic things like epoxy resin. on the other side there is still some humidity going in the wood plates. my tip, just let it how it is. it will hold a few years... ... for normal standard terrarium like python regius, corn snakes, bearded dragon. you should not cover the bottom with wet moss. if you have stagnant moisture the wood will not resist that

otherwise you need a wet moos plastic box. for the normal usage this terrarium is good a second detail: if you build you own individual terrarium, i would not plan the glass from the start otherwise you have to build everything very exact i would build the wood terrarium and measure the glass at the end you measure from here to the bottom on both sides and order the glass afterwards for a snake terrarium we have this set with everything you need we have this wood substrate for the floor that has proven to be good a tree root for climbing and skinning and it looks nice important point, these hiding boxes for the wet moos where the snake can hide...

... and sheds good. also nice, the humidity stays inside the box and does not go inside the terrarium also a water bowl and some plastic plants. the snake does not need it, but it looks nice now the important things, this lightbulb and a ceramic bulb socket with a heat resistant cable this lightbulb makes light and on the other side heat for the temperature rise over the day this bulb should stay on mount the bulb socket on one side of the terrarium with a hook and let it shine in the other corner for the heating we use since 25 years these ceramic infrared heaters. it gets hot so it needs a protection basket witch you have to mount in the terarrium this is the main heating system that stays on all time

and the lightbulb that also produces heat you turn on over the day so you get the day/night temperature rise the temperature you can measure with a thermo-hygrometer at the beginning do not install it fixed, so you can measure different points in this case for royal pythons: daytime 30 and in the night 26 degree celsius should be in the air this is the basic set, if you want to do it better, buy a thermostat and let it control the infrared heater this is better to control the day and night temperatur rise. but this set cost about 50 euro just the set is also ok, if you have the budget to buy a thermostat i can recommend it if you use a thermostat you can also use a stronger infrared heater and instead of this lightbulb you can use a t5 tube only for the lightning, not for the heating

a thermostat in combination with a infrared heater only for the heat and a t5 tube for lightning this was the fast intruduction for our basic set. we already have a episode with a glass terrarium this episode is with a glass terrarium but relatively similar. now i show you the lizard terrarium we saw the snake set, now we go over to the lizard / bearded dragon / desert living animals set this terrarium 1 meter long, not for adult bearded dragons, only for young animal rearing this is just symbolic. it is the same for a 1,5 meter terrarium we start with the backboard made out of cork they are easy to cut, isolate, look good and the animals can climb on them we cut off a piece that fits. if we subtract the side plates we are around 98cm

the left over 2cm we have to cut off with a sharp knife and the help of a ruler this makes little dirt. now we glue the backboard inside the terrarium here the tera fix has been approved, without toxic ingredients great for us. you can also use silicone, but you have to let it outgas. we recommend terrafix, no outgasing here now we have to install this bulb holder, you can use a hook to screw in or a nail. we also have to drill a hole for the cable donâ´t touch the glass of the bulb directly, take something like a paper if you touch it with greasy finger you shortened the shelf lifetime of the bulb

hang the lightbulb at the prepared hook the bulb is conspicuous. but remember, this is the most important part of the terrarium for light and heat the bulb should shine a little bit over, not on the bottom last technical point is the thermo-hygrometer. donâ´t fasten the sensor the first days. you can measure different points: under the bulb for bearded dragons around 40-45 degree celcius coldest corner around 28 degree celcius for leopard geckos you need a weaker bulb. around 10 degree celcius less. in my opinion i would use uv light for leopard geckos technical we are ready, we only need one light bulb for heating, light und uv

for a 1m terrarium we use a 100 watt lightbulb. this is perfect for the right amound of heat and uv-light this light will run at day 10 hours, in the night we switch it off. now we are technical perfect now we put the decoration inside. we use this wood bedding. some people like to use sand. our set also includes a wood root, cork, some greens, water bowl, food bowl, vitamins an animal food thats all, you can do much more with the decoration if you want. you can create a backdrop with some styrofoam and terrafix... afterwards put some tiles glue on it and sprinkle sand over it. see the episode with tobias dold, "indigonattern" you can see some nice backdrops our setup is easy but useful. lets switch on the light

now the light should be on, the bulb needs some seconds to get to 100% the bulb can be more diagonally, just pull at the cable a little bit after my experience a 100 watt bulb is perfect it is also important that you can remove the water bowl. donâ´t mount it directly. you have to take it out for cleaning. put a stone in the water bowl that the feeding insects donâ´t drown. they can climb up the stone as last point in our set the bearded dragon food. the have a lot of protein and can replace some insects some bearded dragon like them, others not. just try it. and very important the vtamins and minerals.

complete with sepia shell, necton msa, heiler multimineral. very important for lizards if the terrarium is finished, let it run without a animal for 1-2-3 days for example, sand is cold and needs some time to get on temperature measure the temperatures at different spots, not every terrarium is the same if everything is alright after 2-3 days you can put the animal inside. i often get asked how much energy does the terarrium need? we use a 100 watt bulb for 10 hours a day. thats is 1 kwh a day = around 0,22 € bigger lamp means more energy but this is how you can calculate it thats it with our diy episode

our check-my-balls t-shirts are back in stock for 20€ in our webshop if you like one we want to film this year a video about german snakes if you know a place where we can find german snakes please help us. of course we do not reveal the place for others. we want to find and film them. see you next time, like always every 1st of the month for the new episode 3pm, the hairstyle is perfect everything inside unfortunately, i now see that it is front ventilation and we wanted side vetilation the board is floating in the air ;)
